Real Madrid have confirmed that Xabi Alonso has left his role as head coach by “mutual agreement” following a short-lived tenure at the Bernabéu.

The announcement comes less than 24 hours after a disappointing defeat to rivals Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final. Despite the club sitting second in La Liga and remaining in contention in the Champions League, the hierarchy has decided to pull the trigger on the former midfield maestro.
In an official club statement, Real Madrid paid tribute to their former player: “Xabi Alonso will always have the affection and admiration of all Madrid fans because he is a Real Madrid legend and has always represented the values of our club. Real Madrid will always be his home.”

Alonso leaves with the club four points adrift of Barcelona in the domestic title race. The search for a successor begins immediately as Los Blancos look to salvage their season.
