Manchester United have a long-standing tradition of fast-tracking elite academy talent into the first team, but few have generated as much immediate “wow factor” as JJ Gabriel. The 15-year-old forward, who has already been nicknamed ‘Kid Messi’ and ‘the next Cristiano Ronaldo’ by sponsors, has been the talk of Carrington this week.
While the Red Devils prepare for their upcoming Premier League clash against Aston Villa under Michael Carrick, it was January signing Bryan Mbeumo who couldn’t help but wax lyrical about the teenager after a shared training session.

Mbeumo: “The Little Guy Has Something Special”
Speaking in a recent interview with Zack En Roue Libre, via Metro, Mbeumo admitted that Gabriel’s physical and technical maturity is far beyond his years. Despite the massive age gap, the Cameroonian international was taken aback by how comfortably the youngster handled the step up to senior level.
“He’s strong, the little guy is strong,” Mbeumo said. “He’s really something, frankly. I think he’s 15? You feel that he’s bound to be a little kid, but he trains quite a bit with us, and you can feel that the little guy has something special.”
Mbeumo continued to praise Gabriel’s ease on the ball: “You see it when he plays. He’s not even with the guys of his generation, and what he does… you feel it’s easy for him. He’s a dribbler, and even in front of the box, I still think he’s good.”

A Meteoric Rise at Carrington
Gabriel’s ascent has been nothing short of historic. Last April, he became the youngest player to ever feature for Manchester United’s Under-18 side during a match against Leeds United. Since then, he hasn’t looked back.
His statistics this season are staggering:
- 20 goals in 22 games for the U18s.
- 9 goals in his last six appearances.
Former manager Ruben Amorim was the first to integrate him into senior sessions back in October, and Michael Carrick has continued that trend, recognizing that the winger is already outgrowing youth football.

When Will He Make His Debut?
While United fans are desperate to see the “next in line” take the pitch at Old Trafford, they will have to be patient. Due to Premier League age restrictions, Gabriel cannot make his official senior debut until he turns 16, meaning a competitive appearance won’t be possible until the 2026-27 campaign.
For now, Gabriel will continue to sharpen his skills against seasoned pros like Mbeumo, who is clearly convinced that United have a generational superstar on their hands.
